Oxford - Part II

Once we’d finished our carrot cake in the Museum of Natural History, we walked through a door at the end of the hall, straight into the Pitt Rivers Museum, and were wowed all over again.

You arrive at the top of a flight of stairs in a huge dark room which is filled to the brim with artefacts of every description in glass cases. It is not entirely dissimilar from how I imagine Borgin and Burkes to be in Harry Potter. WIthout the vanishing cabinet and general black magic I assume.

There were examples from all across the world and ages of: sculptures, masks, pottery, medical equipment, jewellery, costumes (I was particularly blown away by a seal skin inuit waterproof which had been stunningly embroidered all around the hem and cuffs - just incredible!) and so much more. There was an extremely disturbing collection of shrunken heads as well as burned childrens' skulls, which was almost a step too far for my stomach!

I’d strongly recommend a visit if you’re venturing to Oxford, it was utterly fascinating.
